Onda Lifting: How Microwave Energy Targets Facial Fat and Laxity

October 31, 2026
Onda microwave lifting treatment for facial fat and lower-face laxity

Quick answer: Onda lifting uses focused microwave energy (Coolwaves) to heat the fat layer under the skin while a cooling system protects the surface. It is mainly chosen to reduce stubborn fullness in the lower face, such as around the jowls and under the chin, and to firm the overlying skin. Results build gradually over several weeks, with little or no downtime.

What is Onda?

Onda is a device made by DEKA, an Italian medical laser company. It was first developed for body contouring and cellulite, using a technology called Coolwaves, which delivers microwave energy at 2.45 GHz. In Korea, clinics adapted it for the face with smaller handpieces, and "Onda lifting" became a popular treatment for a heavy or undefined lower face.

How does microwave energy work on fat?

Microwaves heat tissue by making water molecules vibrate. Fat cells contain less water than skin, and microwave energy at this frequency is absorbed well in the subcutaneous fat layer. Onda focuses the energy so that heating is concentrated below the skin rather than on the surface.

  • Fat layer – controlled heating stresses fat cells, which the body then gradually clears.
  • Connective tissue – heat also acts on the fibrous septa and dermis, encouraging collagen remodelling and firmer skin.
  • Surface cooling – the handpiece cools the skin throughout, which protects the epidermis and improves comfort.

Who is a good candidate?

Onda lifting is commonly considered by people who have:

  • Fullness or a "heavy" look along the jawline
  • Soft fat under the chin
  • Mild laxity combined with excess fat in the lower face
  • A preference for a non-surgical, low-downtime option

It is less suitable for faces that are already thin or hollow, because reducing fat could make the face look more tired. A broad jaw caused by the masseter muscle responds better to botulinum toxin than to fat reduction. A doctor should check whether your concern is fat, muscle or skin laxity before choosing Onda.

What happens during treatment?

  1. Assessment – the doctor maps where fat sits and marks the treatment zones.
  2. Preparation – the skin is cleansed; numbing is often not needed but can be discussed.
  3. Treatment – the cooled handpiece is moved slowly over each zone while microwave energy is delivered.
  4. Finish – you can usually go back to normal activities straight away.

Facial sessions often take 20–40 minutes depending on the area.

Does it hurt, and what is the downtime?

Most people feel warmth and occasional heat spikes, balanced by the cooling tip. Comfort is usually good compared with many energy-based treatments. Mild redness, swelling or tenderness may last a day or two. Temporary numbness or firm, tender areas are uncommon and usually settle without treatment.

When will you see results, and how many sessions are needed?

Fat reduction and tightening appear gradually over four to twelve weeks as the body clears treated fat and builds new collagen. Some people are happy after one session; others need two or three sessions spaced several weeks apart. Results depend on weight stability, age and skin quality.

How does Onda compare with other options?

HIFU devices such as Shurink and Ultherapy mainly tighten tissue at set depths, while Onda is chosen when fat is part of the problem. Fat-dissolving injections target small, defined pockets with an injectable, which can cause more swelling. Jaw botulinum toxin addresses muscle bulk rather than fat. Clinics sometimes combine Onda with HIFU or RF to address both fat and laxity.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is my fullness caused by fat, muscle or sagging skin?
  • Is Onda the right choice if my face is already slim?
  • How many sessions do you expect I will need?
  • What does the quote cover, and is it per area or per session?
  • How does the plan fit around my travel dates?

Frequently asked questions

Is Onda the same as HIFU?

No. Onda uses microwave energy aimed mainly at the fat layer, while HIFU uses focused ultrasound to tighten tissue at specific depths.

Will the fat come back?

Treated fat cells are cleared by the body, but remaining fat cells can grow with weight gain, so keeping a stable weight helps maintain results.

Can Onda be combined with other treatments?

Often, yes. A doctor may combine it with lifting devices or skin boosters, with appropriate spacing.
